Can I Keep My Doctor? How Provider Networks Work in Florida

Quick answer: Maybe, it depends on the plan. Every plan has a list of doctors it works with, and checking that list before you enroll is the best way to keep your doctor.

What is a provider network?

A network is a group of doctors, hospitals, and clinics that have agreed to special rates with your insurance company. Using them usually costs you less.

What does in-network vs out-of-network mean?

In-network providers charge lower, pre-agreed rates. Out-of-network providers can cost much more, and some plans do not cover them at all.

For example, say your family doctor is in-network on Plan A but not on Plan B. Both plans may have similar premiums, but your visits on Plan B could cost far more.

What are HMO and PPO plans?

  • HMO: Usually lower cost, with a smaller network and a primary doctor who coordinates your care.
  • PPO: Usually more flexibility to choose doctors, often with a higher premium.

How do I check if my doctor is covered?

  1. Make a list of your doctors, specialists, and preferred hospital.
  2. Search each plan's provider directory, or ask us to do it.
  3. Confirm your prescriptions are covered, too.

Networks can change from year to year, so it's worth a recheck each fall.

Quick Questions

  • Can my doctor leave a network?

Yes. Doctors and plans can part ways, which is why a yearly check is helpful.

  • Do I need a referral to see a specialist?

Some plans, like many HMOs, require one. PPOs usually do not.

  • What if I travel outside Florida?

Emergency care is generally covered anywhere. For routine care, check how your plan treats out-of-area visits.

  • Does a bigger network cost more?

Often, yes. Broader networks tend to have higher premiums.

  • Can you check my doctors for me?

Absolutely. We'll look up your doctors and prescriptions on each plan for free.
